Windows 10 includes a new dark theme in version 1809 or later. Dark Mode changes the white user interface used by Windows system apps and Microsoft’s store apps, to the dark color. Dark theme reduces strain on your eyes. And, if you don’t prefer white or light backgrounds, you’re going to love it.
The Dark Mode supports most of the default Windows 10 apps and, such as File Explorer, Photos, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Mail, Settings, and likes.

To enable the dark theme on Windows 10, use these steps.
- Go to the Colors setting screen (Settings > Personalization > Colors).
- Under ‘Choose your default app mode’ option, select ‘Dark’ radio button.
Once you’ve completed the steps, Windows 10 will immediately change the color scheme to the dark theme.
Note: Microsoft Edge and Office suite do not follow this system-wide setting, as they’ve their own individual dark theme. Learn how to enable dark mode for Office and Edge.
Enable dark mode in Microsoft Edge and Office
Dark theme setting in Microsoft Edge and Office is completely independent from the system-wide app theme. For example, you can use dark theme in Edge browser while using the light theme for all your other apps.
To enable the dark theme in Office, go to ‘File’ > ‘Options’ > ‘General’ > ‘Office Theme’. Now, set the theme to ‘Dark Gray’ or ‘Black’.
To enable dark mode in Edge, click the menu icon at the top-right corner, and go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Choose a theme’. Then, select the ‘Dark’ option.
The dark theme option in Edge only changes its interface, not the web pages you visit. To make web pages appear darker, you need to install an extension like Turn Off the Lights, from the Microsoft Store. After installing this extension, follow the steps.
- Go to menu > ‘Extensions’ > ‘Turn Off the Lights’, and turn the toggle on.
- Right-click on ‘Turn Off the Lights’ icon at the top bar, and click ‘Manage’ > ‘Options’.
- Click on the ‘Night Mode’ tab, and then, check the box for ‘Show the night switch button below the web page to make the page dark or light’.
Now, it will place a button on each web page you visit. By clicking on it, you can activate the dark background for that page.
Enable dark background in all desktop apps
Windows 10 Dark Mode setting doesn’t affect others installed apps on your desktop. In those apps, you can still experience a dark background by enabling High Contrast mode. Though, it doesn’t look nearly as slick as dark mode would. To enable it, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Ease of Access’ > ‘High Contrast’. And turn on the toggle under ‘high contrast’.
